Family Memories
In 1940, Hardin Freeman McQuiddy wrote this recollection of her Uncle Matt and Aunt Sarah:
In pumpkin time I never tasted pumpkin as sweet as Aunt Sarah's or turnip greens and hog jowl as fine. I never saw such a bountiful provider as Uncle Matt. I have known 20 or more to go home with them from church, all the family had gone to church. The dinner would be cooked, set back on the stove, ready to take up. There was always plenty and enough to feed a few more should they come in late. Milk, butter out of the spring fresh and cool as any refrigerator, and never until Aunt Sarah's last days did they need a cook or wash-woman. She did all her work and was perfect.
Aunt Sarah and Uncle Matt raised 14 children to be grown; there were 15 but one little boy Robert died in his first year. In that large family not a black sheep could be found. I've thought often they never had an uneasy thought about their children's conduct. She feared no evil for they did no evil. The older brothers looked after the young ones and same way with the sisters. Their neighbors were friends and they married among them, raised fine families and held high places of honor, and to this day I know of no blemish in mind or character. Uncle Matt and Aunt Sarah raised them in the fear and admonition of the Lord.
